Jirah Luce, Sr. (born January 18, 1818 in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts; died December 28, 1880 in Healdsburg, California)
was a farmer who served as a justice of the peace in Healdsburg, California for 9 years. He married Mary Cottle on August
4,1839 and had six children. He left Martha's Vineyard with a group of Vineyarders in February 1849 and sailed around the
Horn on the ship "Mary Robinson" landing in San Francisco. Luce followed mining and was also engaged in the carrying trade
with a vessel. In 1857 the family joined him in San Francisco. By 1860, they had purchased a ranch near Petaluma, California,
on the Marin County side of the San Antonio Creek. In 1862 they purchased a ranch some three miles from Healdsburg, Sonoma
County. Jirah Luce, Sr. is buried in Oak Mound Cemetery, Sonoma County, California.
